Scripture Text
Psalm 62:5-12
Intro: King David under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is giving
us his life experiences to help us in making wise decisions on how to
live life correctly so we can avoid unwise decisions and actions that
might harm us.
A. Who or what is your hope in? Psalms
62:5 (NKJV) My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation
is
from Him.
1. David is in the midst of great trouble and he speaks to his
own soul (the seat of his consciousness). David reminds himself that
God alone is his hope. Hope here means confident expectation. David
knows if he puts his hope in anyone or anything other than God, he
will be greatly disappointed and miserable. So will we! His reminds
himself that his confident expectation for help would come from God
and Him alone!
B. David
reminds himself of God's characteristics. Psalms
62:6-7 (NKJV) 6 He
only is
my rock and my salvation; He
is my defense; I shall not
be moved. 7 In
God is
my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And
my refuge, is
in God.
- God is my Rock. A symbol of steadfastness, unmovable, and unchanging.
- My salvation- Not only of his soul, but from every situation and circumstance in which he might find himself. He knew there is no other savior but God alone.
- My defense- God alone would be David's defense against all his enemies and every other problem or circumstance he would go through.
- Because God was all these things to him, he would not be moved or shaken by any circumstance or situation he found himself in.
- In verse 7 David repeats that God alone is his salvation. He goes on to say that God is his glory which means his honor. He didn't look to his own qualifications for his honor. Self honor is worthless. Peoples honor are also worthless.
6. David says
God is the rock (the stability, steadfastness) of his strength. Even
though he was a great king and an experienced warrior, he didn't
look to himself for the strength he needed to make it thorough
life's circumstances and problems.
C.
David instructs the saints to trust in God alone. Psalms
62:8 (NKJV) Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your
heart before Him; God is
a refuge for us. Selah
1. At all times! Whatever
might be going on in your life.
2. He says to pour out
your heart to Him because God is a refuge or shelter from all the storms in our lives.
D. David advises
all saints what not to trust in. Psalms
62:9-10 (NKJV) 9 Surely
men of low degree are
a vapor, Men of high degree are
a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are
altogether lighter
than vapor. 10 Do
not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches
increase, Do not set your
heart on them.
1. Don't trust in mankind,
whether they are common people or men of high degree. They are not
reliable and are sure to let you down.2. Don't oppress others to
get wealthy. Don't be cruel or treat people unjustly to get what
you want.3. Don't steal from others
to get what you desire. Look to God alone.4. Don't set your heart on
money. Don't let it become an idol to you.
E. David's advises look to God alone. Psalms
62:11-12 (NKJV) 11 God
has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs
to God. 12 Also
to You, O Lord, belongs
mercy; For You render to each one according to his work.
1.
Because all power belongs to God alone. He alone is strong enough to
provide all your needs. Mercy or unfailing love belongs only to God
alone. God will render to everyone his judgment. It will be based on
what you have done. God alone is qualified to judge because He alone
judges justly, righteously.
Invitation:
Who or what are you looking to for your salvation? Who or what are
you putting your hope in for this life and the life to come? If it is
not Jesus Christ alone and His finished work on the cross, confess
your sins to Him right now and ask Him to forgive and save you from
Hell and for Heaven. Invite Him to take charge of your life from this
day forward. The choice is yours to make!
Be wise and trust in Christ
alone for your salvation! Make your decision public in church!
